Tampa Bay Fly Fishing for Redfish
With the full moon low tides an the wind gods in are favor we had to crack out the long rods and go do some sight casting to big Redfish and Trout on fly and spinning gear in less than a foot of water. As we started poling done the first flat as the tide was going out and a light North East wind we stared to see a few fish and had a few shots at some nice Redfish but just couldn’t get them to take the fly so we made a short run south to catch the first part of the incoming tide. As we pulled up to the flat the tide just stared moving and the mullet were every where as we poled in to the area the the first Redfish was swimming right towards the boat we put the shrimp fly in front of him and fish on and a few minutes later we end up with a nice 25 inch Redfish. We released that one and before you could get back on the casting platform we had a school of 10 coming at us and made a short cast out and in front of them and before he could strip the fly line two Reds tailed up on the fly and the one got it and took off. It ended up being a nice 27 inch Red. It was my turn up on the front of the boat. As i got my 8wt ready it looked like the Redfish were just every where. I spotted a nice fish and made a cast and landed to the left of him so i made another cast that was on target and hooked up a big Redfish on a crab pattern and got him to the boat and then we got blown out by a jet boat so we went back to the ramp to get ready for the next day.
Day 2
As we left the boat ramp heading south to where we fished yesterday you could see the cold front coming in from the North West. We
just wanted to beat it so we could get a few hours of Redfishing in before it got to bad. When we pulled up the clouds started coming in and the wind started blowing a little but the fish are still there you just cant see them. So we put the Power Pole down and staked the boat off with the Wang Anchor so we could both cast. As we started to see a few fish the blind casting started and we would pick up a few Redfish on fly and the weather started to get worse so we ran up to the creeks for some Trout and tied on a few clouser minnows and caught 35 to 40 Trout from 15 to 22 inches in an hour than headed back to the ramp and watched the wind start blowing.
